The buccal transmucosal (BTM) route
Unither is now offering drug delivery solutions which exploit a novel, non-invasive administration route, the efficacy of which is similar to that of intravenous injection.

- Main legend: Drug delivery routes
- inhalation (lungs, bronchi)
- the rectal route
- the conventional oral route
- the buccal transmucosal route. Immediate action on:
- the vena cava system
- lungs, bronchi
- the systemic circulation and arterial flow
- the portal vein system (immediate action on the liver).
A breakthrough in the field of drug delivery: Uniflash® technology for the buccal transmucosal route.
In the technology developed by Unither, lipophilic molecules are very rapidly absorbed through the buccal mucosa (the epithelial membrane of which is lipophilic). This highly vascularised mucosa enables rapid delivery to the whole body via the sublingual and jugular veins.
This innovation can achieve much the same pharmacodynamic performance levels as in intravenous injection: it enables direct distribution to pulmonary and cardiac tissues and then (via the arterial system) to the rest of the body.
Use of the Uniflash® technology means that significant dose reductions can be envisaged, since drug metabolism by the liver (the famous "first pass effect") is considerably reduced.
