Ophthalmic Sol-Gel: a major innovation for optimizing diagnostic mydriasis
Ophthalmic Applications: Unither’s Advances to Improve Patients’ Lives
For several years, Unither has focused its efforts on the research and development of innovative ophthalmic solutions, with a clear objective: to simplify the patient journey by offering treatments that are more effective, more comfortable, and safer.
International Expertise Dedicated to Ophthalmic Innovation
Unither’s expertise relies on a network of complementary sites:
– Coutances and Amiens, specialized in the development and manufacturing of ophthalmic dosage forms.
– The Bordeaux laboratories, a major innovation center.
– The site in China, a key driver of development in the Asian region.
The Sol‑Gel technology, initiated in 2012 by Ni Zeng, Head of Development for China, and later further developed by Pierre‑Louis Destruel, has led to six international scientific publications.
Ophthalmic Sol‑Gel: Over 3 Years of Research for a Major Innovation
It took more than three years of research to obtain the final results on the mydriatic Sol‑Gel, a novel in‑situ gelling ophthalmic formulation designed to optimize diagnostic and pre‑operative mydriasis.
This work was conducted jointly by Unither’s teams and those of:
– AGEPS (General Agency for Health Products and Equipment, AP‑HP)
– The Chemical and Biological Technologies for Health Unit, University of Paris, CNRS, INSERM, Faculty of Pharmacy
What Are the Benefits?
Mydriasis—an essential step before many eye examinations and surgical procedures—presents several limitations when using traditional eye drops:
– Rapid elimination from the ocular surface
– Low bioavailability
– Repeated administration of multiple drops
– Patient discomfort and excessive use of active ingredients
Unither’s Sol‑Gel offers an innovative solution thanks to its ability to gel directly on the eye, enabling:
– Extended ocular residence
– Sustained release of active ingredients
– A single‑drop administration
– A 4 to 8‑fold reduction in the quantity of active ingredients required
Highly Promising In Vivo Results
In vivo studies demonstrate remarkable efficacy:
✔ Extended ocular residence time
Presence of the gel on the eye for more than 3 hours
Visualization through a fluorescent dye
✔ Rapid and long‑lasting mydriasis
A single drop is sufficient
Effective pupil dilation (increase > 5 mm) maintained for several hours
✔ Performance comparable to current treatments
Results similar to traditional regimens requiring multiple drops
Quantity of active ingredients reduced by a factor of 4 to 8
A Technology Designed to Transform Clinical Practice
Unither’s ophthalmic Sol‑Gel offers significant advantages:
– Simple, safe, and reproducible administration
– Resistance to blinking thanks to adapted viscoelastic properties
– Improved therapeutic efficacy
– Reduced risks associated with high doses
– Enhanced patient comfort
This innovation represents a major advancement for diagnostic and pre‑operative mydriasis.
