Warning about a Nasal Irrigation Method Considered Too Aggressive
The winter of 2023–2024 was marked by an unusual increase in cases of acute otitis media in children. According to ENT specialists, this rise may be linked to a new nasal irrigation technique that has gained popularity on social media.
This method involves using a 10 mL syringe fitted with a silicone tip to inject saline solution under pressure. Considered excessively aggressive by specialists, it may promote the spread of infections to the middle ear due to the volume of liquid injected and the pressure applied.
In response to these concerns, the French Association of Pediatric ENT Specialists (Association Française d’ORL Pédiatrique) is preparing a statement to alert parents and remind them of best practices for nasal irrigation.
